Beskrivning
A portrait of the composer Carl Friedrich Abel by Thomas Gainsborough, capturing the musician in a moment of creative composition.
Thomas Gainsborough painted this portrait of the German composer and viola da gamba player, Carl Friedrich Abel, around 1777. The two men were close friends, and the work captures a sense of intimacy rarely seen in formal eighteenth-century portraiture. Abel is depicted in his studio, seated at a writing desk with a quill in hand, suggesting he is in the process of composing music. His instrument, the viola da gamba, rests against his chair, bridging the gap between his professional identity and his personal space.
Gainsborough employs a fluid, painterly technique that defines his mature style. The brushwork is light and feathery, particularly in the rendering of the fabric of Abel's coat and the soft, draped background. The colour palette is warm, dominated by earthy browns, ochres, and the deep red of the upholstered chair. This choice of tone creates a harmonious atmosphere, reflecting the quiet concentration of the subject. A small dog, often identified as Abel's pet, rests on the floor beneath the desk, adding a domestic touch to the composition.
The painting demonstrates Gainsborough's ability to balance formal portraiture with naturalistic observation. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured rigid, posed arrangements, Gainsborough presents Abel in a moment of creative activity. The light source, coming from the left, illuminates the composer's face and the manuscript, drawing the viewer into the scene. This work remains a fine example of the artist's skill in capturing character through gesture and setting, rather than relying solely on the trappings of status. It is currently held in the collection of the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.

Artist Biography
Thomas Gainsborough
He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, in 1727. His father went bankrupt in 1733. He moved to London as a teenager and trained under the French engraver Hubert-Francois Gravelot. By his thirties he was one of the two dominant portrait painters in Georgian England, the other being Joshua Reynolds. The rivalry with Reynolds defined both their careers.
The Blue Boy is probably his most famous painting, though he would have preferred to be remembered for his landscapes. On his deathbed he reconciled with Reynolds. Reynolds later wrote that the Royal Academy had lost one of its greatest ornaments. Gainsborough died in 1788, aged sixty-one.
