A refined woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring delicate poppies in soft orange and blue-green tones.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai belongs to a series of large-format flower studies produced during the 1830s. Hokusai, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, applied his technical precision to the natural world, moving beyond the human subjects that dominated the genre. The composition features a cluster of poppies arranged against a pale, atmospheric blue background.
The artist employs a refined colour palette, using soft oranges and pinks for the petals, contrasted with deep, dark blue-green tones for the serrated leaves. The lines are calligraphic and controlled, defining the delicate structure of the flowers while maintaining a sense of organic movement. Hokusai captures the poppies at different stages of their life cycle, from tight, nodding buds to fully opened blooms.
Technically, the print demonstrates the high standards of Edo-period woodblock production. The registration of the colours is precise, and the subtle gradation of the background suggests the influence of Western perspective and shading techniques, which Hokusai studied during his career. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the balance between the negative space and the physical form of the plants. This print is a representative example of the artist's late-career interest in kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower painting, where he sought to document the essence of flora with scientific observation and artistic grace. The absence of a formal series title suggests these works were intended as individual studies of nature, meant to be appreciated for their aesthetic clarity and the mastery of the woodblock medium.
