A reproduction of a page from the Shokunin zukushi uta-awase, featuring traditional Japanese ink illustrations of artisans paired with waka poetry.
This print reproduces a page from the Shokunin zukushi uta-awase, or Poetry Contest by Various Artisans, a significant example of the Muromachi period's interest in social documentation. Attributed to Tosa Mitsunobu, the head of the Tosa school of painting, this work belongs to a genre known as shokunin-zukushi, which catalogues the various trades and professions of the era. The composition pairs illustrations of craftsmen with accompanying waka poetry, creating a dialogue between the visual representation of labour and the literary traditions of the court.
The imagery displays the characteristic refinement of the Tosa school, which maintained the traditions of Yamato-e, or Japanese-style painting. The figures are rendered with precise, thin ink lines, capturing the posture and tools of the artisans with clarity. Unlike later, more stylised woodblock prints, this work retains the immediacy of a hand-drawn sketch, reflecting the aesthetic values of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The text, written in a flowing cursive script, complements the figures, providing context for the specific trades depicted.
By documenting the daily lives of commoners, this work offers a view into the social structure of medieval Japan. It moves away from the purely religious or aristocratic subjects that dominated earlier periods, instead focusing on the tangible reality of the working class. The balance between the calligraphic text and the illustrative figures creates a harmonious page layout, typical of the handscroll and book formats of the time. This print is a study in historical observation, capturing the essence of professional life through a lens of artistic restraint and technical precision. It remains a primary source for understanding the material culture and social hierarchies of the Muromachi era.
