A fine art print of a fragment from the Kumogami-bon Wakan rōeishū, featuring elegant Japanese calligraphy on cloud-patterned paper.
This piece represents a fragment of the Kumogami-bon, or Cloud-Patterned Paper version, of the Wakan rōeishū. The Wakan rōeishū is a celebrated anthology of Japanese and Chinese poetry compiled by Fujiwara no Kintō in the early 11th century. These poems were intended for recitation at courtly gatherings, serving as a primary text for the cultural elite of the Heian period.
The physical presentation of the text is as significant as the literary content. The paper features subtle, cloud-like washes of blue pigment, which provide a soft backdrop for the dark, fluid ink of the calligraphy. The surrounding border consists of a textile mount with a repeating pattern, typical of the presentation style for scrolls or album leaves of this era. The calligraphy itself displays the characteristic grace of the period, with characters flowing across the page in a manner that balances legibility with aesthetic rhythm.
Monk Jakuren, a poet and calligrapher of the late Heian and early Kamakura periods, is associated with this style of refined, courtly script. The work demonstrates the integration of visual art and literature, where the medium of the paper and the application of ink function as a unified expression. The cloud motifs on the paper suggest a celestial or ethereal quality, aligning with the themes often found in the recited poetry. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the precise, rhythmic strokes of the ink, offering a view into the aesthetic standards of medieval Japanese literary culture.
