A classic suiboku-ga ink painting by Unkoku Tōgan, depicting the hermit Pan Lang on a journey through a misty, atmospheric landscape.
This work by Unkoku Tōgan depicts the legendary figure Pan Lang, known in Japan as Han Rō, a hermit associated with the Song dynasty poet Su Shi. The composition is executed in the suiboku-ga tradition, which relies on the expressive potential of ink wash on paper. Tōgan, who founded the Unkoku school, was heavily influenced by the style of Sesshū Tōyō. His approach here demonstrates a mastery of negative space, where the vast, unpainted areas of the paper suggest a misty, atmospheric environment.
The scene features a central figure mounted on a donkey, accompanied by an attendant on foot. The lines defining the robes and the animals are economical, showing the artist's ability to convey form through minimal strokes. The background features subtle, washed-in mountain forms that recede into the distance, providing a sense of scale without overwhelming the primary subjects. In the foreground, the rocks and foliage are rendered with darker, more deliberate ink applications, grounding the figures within the space.
As a representative of the Momoyama period, this piece reflects the aesthetic preferences of the samurai class and the Zen Buddhist tradition. The focus remains on the solitary journey of the scholar-hermit, a common theme in East Asian ink painting. The lack of colour directs the viewer to the texture of the brushwork and the varying density of the ink. This print captures the quietude of the original screen painting, preserving the balance between the detailed foreground elements and the expansive, ethereal background. It is a study in restraint, where the artist communicates the essence of the narrative through subtle tonal shifts and precise, calligraphic line work.
