This work presents a fine example of Zen calligraphy by the Japanese monk and scholar Kokan Shiren. The piece features a poem written in Chinese characters, a common practice among the intellectual elite of the Kamakura period. The text reflects on the nature of sugar, demonstrating the intersection of philosophical inquiry and daily observation within the monastic tradition.
Kokan Shiren was a prominent figure in the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. His mastery of both Japanese and Chinese literary forms allowed him to contribute significantly to the Gozan literature movement. The calligraphy itself displays a fluid, confident hand. Each character is formed with a balance of pressure and speed, typical of the period's calligraphic standards. The ink tones vary from deep, saturated blacks to lighter, more translucent washes, providing a rhythmic quality to the composition.
