A fine art print of a Zen calligraphy scroll by the Japanese monk Baisaō, transcribing a poem by the recluse Hanshan.
This work features the distinctive calligraphy of Baisaō, the eccentric Zen monk known for his itinerant tea-selling practice in Kyoto during the mid-eighteenth century. The text transcribes a poem attributed to the legendary Tang dynasty recluse Hanshan. Baisaō, born Kō Yūgai, abandoned his monastic status to live as a free spirit, and his brushwork reflects this unconventional life. His style is marked by a lack of formal rigidity, favouring a fluid, expressive quality that prioritises the transmission of Zen philosophy over technical perfection.
The characters are rendered with a confident, rhythmic hand. The ink density varies across the paper, showing the speed and pressure of the brush as it moved across the surface. This specific piece dates to 1760, a period when Baisaō was in his final years, producing works that often focused on themes of simplicity, detachment, and the natural world. The composition is balanced, with the vertical columns of text creating a sense of movement that guides the eye from right to left. The presence of red seals provides a visual counterpoint to the monochrome ink, grounding the composition within the tradition of Japanese literati art.
Baisaō remains a figure of interest for his rejection of institutionalised Buddhism in favour of a personal, humble practice. His calligraphy is not merely a decorative exercise but a direct expression of his meditative state. By choosing to transcribe the verses of Hanshan, Baisaō aligns himself with the tradition of the wandering poet-monk, celebrating the quietude of the autumn moon and the clarity of mind it represents. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the nuances of the ink, offering a clear view of the artist's hand.
