This hanging scroll by Suga Mitsusada depicts a figure associated with the pleasure quarters of Edo-period Japan. The composition follows the traditional format of a bijin-ga, or picture of a beautiful woman, which was a primary subject within the Ukiyo-e tradition. The figure is captured in a dynamic pose, holding a fan, with her kimono rendered in a distinct checked pattern that contrasts with the more fluid lines of her posture and the surrounding calligraphy.
Above the figure, a delicate rendering of flowering branches occupies a rectangular space, providing a seasonal reference often found in Japanese scroll painting. The inclusion of calligraphy serves to integrate the visual and literary arts, a common practice in works intended for refined domestic display. The artist, Suga Mitsusada, was a pupil of the renowned painter Soga Shōhaku, and his work often reflects a synthesis of traditional ink painting techniques with the popular themes of the urban pleasure districts.
The scroll is mounted with a decorative border, which frames the central image and the accompanying text. The ink work demonstrates a high level of control, particularly in the rendering of the figure's hair and the folds of the fabric. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the period, where the depiction of courtesans and entertainers was both a commercial enterprise and a subject for artistic exploration.
