A refined Ukiyo-e hanging scroll depicting a woman in an inscribed kimono, capturing the grace and fashion of the Edo period.
This hanging scroll depicts a bijin, or beautiful woman, a subject central to the Ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period. Kondo Katsunobu employs a refined aesthetic, focusing on the figure's posture and the decorative qualities of her attire. The woman stands in a gentle curve, her body angled to display the elaborate design of her kimono. The garment is rendered in a deep, dark tone, which provides a contrast to the lighter silk background and the subtle red lining visible at the hem.
The kimono features rectangular panels containing calligraphic inscriptions, a stylistic choice that integrates literature with visual art. This technique suggests the subject is a woman of culture, perhaps a courtesan or a performer from the pleasure districts of the era. The artist uses thin, controlled lines to define the facial features and the folds of the fabric, maintaining a sense of grace and composure. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the majority of the vertical space, typical of the hanging scroll format intended for display in a tokonoma, or alcove.
Katsunobu's approach to the figure is characteristic of early to mid-eighteenth-century Japanese painting. The focus remains on the silhouette and the pattern of the clothing rather than anatomical realism. The muted colour palette, dominated by black, white, and soft earth tones, allows the viewer to appreciate the precision of the brushwork. The inclusion of text within the design of the clothing serves as a graphic element, flattening the pictorial space and emphasising the two-dimensional nature of the silk surface. This work provides a window into the fashion and artistic sensibilities of the Edo period, capturing a moment of quiet poise.
