This engraving depicts the architectural design for Villa Cornaro, a residence located in Piombino Dese, Italy. The upper portion of the print shows the floor plan, revealing a symmetrical layout organised around a central hall. The lower portion presents the front elevation, demonstrating the classical proportions and order that define Palladian architecture. The drawing includes numerical annotations, which provide measurements for the various rooms and structural elements, reflecting the precision required for construction.
Andrea Palladio published these designs in his influential treatise, I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura (The Four Books of Architecture), in 1570. This work disseminated his theories on symmetry, perspective, and the application of classical principles to domestic buildings. The print captures the clarity of his vision, where the mathematical harmony of the plan translates directly into the balanced facade. The use of clean lines and minimal shading allows the viewer to focus on the structural logic of the building.
