A Renaissance engraving by Giovanni Antonio da Brescia, depicting a classical female figure pouring water onto a plant.
This engraving by Giovanni Antonio da Brescia depicts a female figure in a classical pose, pouring water from a small vessel onto a plant. The artist, an Italian engraver active in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, was known for his technical proficiency in the medium of copperplate engraving. His work often reflects the influence of Andrea Mantegna, particularly in the treatment of drapery and the firm, clear outlines that define the figure against the background.
The composition features a central nude figure draped in flowing fabric, which is rendered with precise, parallel hatching to suggest volume and shadow. The background includes a distant architectural structure and a body of water, elements typical of the period's interest in integrating human figures with constructed environments. The figure holds a lidded vessel in her left hand while pouring water with her right, a gesture that suggests an allegorical meaning, perhaps related to temperance or the nurturing of nature. The artist's signature, 'Io A B', is visible in the lower right corner, a common mark for his prints.
Technically, the engraving demonstrates the artist's ability to create tonal variation through the density and direction of his lines. The sky is marked by simple, horizontal strokes, while the ground and the figure's form are modelled with more complex cross-hatching. This print provides a clear example of the printmaking practices in Northern Italy during the Renaissance, where artists sought to disseminate classical themes and stylistic innovations through the medium of the multiple. The work remains a study in the balance between human form and the surrounding environment, executed with the disciplined hand characteristic of the period's master engravers.
