Beskrivning
A 1908 Neo-Primitivist work by Natalia Goncharova, featuring three monolithic, stone-like figures set against a backdrop of sharp, angular colour.
Natalia Goncharova painted Pillars of Salt in 1908, a period during which she moved away from Impressionist influences to embrace the aesthetic of Russian folk art and icon painting. This work demonstrates her early engagement with Neo-Primitivism, a movement that sought to strip away the artifice of Western academic traditions in favour of direct, simplified forms.
The composition features three monolithic, pale figures that resemble stone carvings or ancient stelae. Their forms are reduced to geometric planes, with facial features suggested through minimal, angular lines. The figures possess a rigid, columnar quality, echoing the biblical narrative of Lot's wife, yet they are rendered with a sculptural weight that feels detached from traditional religious iconography. The background consists of sharp, diagonal slashes of deep red and dark blue, creating a sense of atmospheric tension that contrasts with the static nature of the figures.
Goncharova utilised a palette that balances the cool, chalky tones of the figures against the aggressive, warm hues of the surrounding space. This juxtaposition creates a visual rhythm, forcing the viewer to focus on the volume and mass of the subjects. The painting reflects her interest in the Scythian stone statues found across the Russian steppes, which she studied during her youth. By synthesising these archaic influences with the formal innovations of early twentieth-century modernism, Goncharova created a work that feels both ancient and contemporary. The lack of soft transitions or blended shadows emphasises the flatness of the picture plane, a characteristic feature of her work during this experimental phase. This print captures the raw energy and deliberate simplification that defined her contribution to the Russian avant-garde.
