A powerful 1945 etching by André Racz, depicting the myth of Perseus through sharp, expressionistic lines and a dramatic red and black palette.
André Racz, a Romanian-born artist who settled in the United States, produced this striking work in 1945. It belongs to a series exploring the Greek myth of Perseus. The composition captures the violent climax of the narrative through a lens of mid-century expressionism. Racz employs a complex layering of lines, using etching and engraving techniques to create a sense of frantic movement and psychological tension.
The visual language is dominated by sharp, angular forms that suggest the blade of the hero and the contorted figure of the Gorgon. The palette is restricted to deep blacks and intense reds, which heighten the dramatic quality of the scene. Rather than a literal depiction, the image functions as a study of form and energy. The figures appear to dissolve into the background, creating a sense of instability that mirrors the chaotic nature of the mythic encounter.
Racz was known for his technical proficiency in printmaking, and this work demonstrates his ability to manipulate the copper plate to achieve varied textures. The lines range from delicate, hair-like strokes to bold, heavy marks that define the primary shapes. This print reflects the broader interest in classical mythology among artists working in the post-war period, who often used ancient stories to examine contemporary human experiences. The work is held in several major institutional collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it is recognised for its contribution to the graphic arts of the 1940s. It remains a compelling example of how traditional printmaking processes can be adapted to convey modern, subjective interpretations of historical narratives.
