A Baroque study in ink and wash depicting the mythological rescue of Andromeda by Perseus, executed by the Flemish artist Louis de Deyster.
This drawing by the Flemish artist Louis de Deyster depicts the classical myth of Perseus and Andromeda. Deyster, who spent a significant period in Italy, incorporates the dramatic sensibilities of the Baroque period into this composition. The scene is organised with a clear narrative focus: Perseus is shown mid-air, mounted on Pegasus, descending to rescue Andromeda, who is positioned on the rocky outcrop to the right.
The foreground features a group of figures observing the event, their postures conveying a sense of agitation and anticipation. Deyster employs pen and brown ink to define the forms, while the application of grey wash provides volume and atmospheric depth. The artist uses the wash to create shadows that ground the figures within the space, despite the sketch-like quality of the work. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figures on the left countered by the diagonal movement of the rescue in the upper right and the small boat in the lower right corner.
Deyster's technique reveals a focus on fluid movement and the articulation of human form through light and shadow. The signature at the bottom indicates the artist's hand, typical of his preparatory studies. This work provides insight into the creative process of a painter who was active in Bruges during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The drawing captures the tension of the mythological narrative through economical means, relying on the interplay between the ink lines and the tonal washes to guide the viewer's eye across the scene. It is a fine example of the draftsmanship common to the period, where the study served as a necessary step in the development of larger, more formal compositions.
