A detailed Baroque drawing by Godfried Maes depicting a mythological scene of Bacchus and his followers in a classical architectural setting.
This work by the Flemish painter Godfried Maes depicts a classical scene centred on the worship of Bacchus. The composition is organised around a central architectural element, featuring twisted columns adorned with vine leaves, which frame the seated figure of the god. Maes employs a dynamic arrangement of figures, including satyrs, nymphs, and elderly devotees, to convey the revelry associated with the Bacchic cult. The foreground contains smaller figures, including putti, engaged in the consumption of wine, which reinforces the thematic focus on excess and ritual offering.
Technically, the drawing demonstrates the characteristics of late seventeenth-century Flemish draughtsmanship. Maes uses pen and brown ink to define the contours of the figures and the architectural setting, while grey wash provides volume and atmospheric depth. The application of wash creates a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows beneath the columns to the lighter, more ethereal treatment of the sky and background. The artist balances the crowded foreground with a more open, sketch-like treatment of the distant landscape, guiding the eye through the various groups of participants.
As a preparatory study or a finished drawing for a larger composition, the work reflects the influence of the Antwerp school, where Maes was active. His ability to manage a complex narrative with multiple figures in motion is typical of the period, which favoured theatricality and classical allegory. The inclusion of specific attributes, such as the thyrsus held by Bacchus and the various vessels for wine, ensures the subject remains legible within the conventions of Baroque iconography. This print captures the fluidity of the original ink lines and the subtle gradations of the wash, preserving the tactile quality of the artist's hand.
