A Meiji-era woodblock triptych depicting an aristocratic family in a domestic setting, blending traditional Japanese space with Western fashion and decor.
This woodblock print by Inoue Yasuji captures the rapid cultural shifts occurring in Japan during the Meiji period. The scene depicts an aristocratic family engaged in leisure activities within a domestic setting that blends traditional Japanese architecture with Western-style furnishings and attire. The figures are dressed in contemporary European fashion, including bustled dresses and military-style uniforms, reflecting the government-led adoption of Western customs at the time.
Inoue Yasuji, a student of Kobayashi Kiyochika, was known for his interest in light and atmospheric effects, though this particular work leans into the genre of social documentation. The composition is divided into three panels, typical of the triptych format used for large-scale narrative scenes. The interior space features ornate carpets and heavy drapery, while the background reveals a glimpse of a manicured garden and a distant horizon, suggesting a transition between the private home and the public sphere. The inclusion of a toy horse and children playing provides a sense of domestic normalcy, contrasting with the formal posture of the adults.
The print serves as a record of the aesthetic hybridity that defined the late nineteenth century in Tokyo. The colour palette is balanced, utilising muted tones for the clothing and interior elements, which allows the figures to stand out against the patterned floor and the distant, glowing sky. The lines are precise, characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques refined during this era. This work offers a view into the lives of the elite who were at the forefront of Japan's modernisation, documenting the adoption of new social rituals and material culture.
