A seminal work of biomorphic abstraction by Arshile Gorky, featuring a structured arrangement of organic forms and contrasting colour planes.
Arshile Gorky, born Vostanik Manoug Adoyan, occupies a unique position in the development of American modernism. His work acts as a bridge between the European avant-garde traditions of Cubism and Surrealism and the emerging Abstract Expressionist movement in New York. Organization, painted during the mid-1930s, demonstrates his early engagement with the formal language of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró.
The composition is defined by a series of biomorphic shapes that float against a stark, divided background. Gorky employs a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by areas of flat black and a singular, bright red form. The shapes possess a sculptural quality, suggesting organic entities or anatomical fragments, yet they remain resolutely non-representational. The artist uses a combination of smooth, flat colour application and textured areas, particularly within the central form, which introduces a sense of tactile variation to the surface.
Unlike the later, more fluid works for which Gorky is known, Organization retains a structured, almost architectural quality. The canvas is divided into distinct zones, with the large black area on the right creating a strong sense of negative space that pushes the lighter, more complex forms forward. This tension between the flat, graphic background and the modelled, three-dimensional appearance of the central figures is a hallmark of Gorky's experimental period. The work reflects his rigorous study of European masters, as he sought to synthesise their techniques into a personal visual vocabulary. By stripping away narrative content, Gorky focuses the viewer on the interplay of line, shape, and colour, creating a composition that relies on internal balance rather than external reference.
