Gustave Caillebotte, a figure often associated with the Impressionist circle, produced this study of orchids towards the end of his life. During his final years at Petit-Gennevilliers, Caillebotte devoted much of his time to his garden. This work reflects his personal interest in horticulture, a passion he shared with his brother, Martial. The painting captures a hanging basket of orchids, rendered with a direct and energetic brushwork that prioritises the immediate visual sensation of the flowers over rigid botanical accuracy.
The composition is notable for its unconventional framing. By focusing on the suspended basket and the cascading stems, Caillebotte creates a sense of proximity. The palette is restrained, relying on cool whites, soft purples, and touches of orange to define the petals and foliage. The background remains light and airy, allowing the form of the orchids to emerge through quick, decisive strokes.
