Hiroshige employs a distinctive compositional technique here, placing large, detailed iris blossoms in the immediate foreground. This choice forces the viewer to look past the flora to perceive the distant garden scene, creating a sense of depth that contrasts with the flat colour planes typical of the period.

The Horikiri Iris Garden was a popular destination for residents of Edo, known for its extensive collection of varieties. Hiroshige captures the atmosphere of the site with a focus on the interplay between the vertical lines of the iris stems and the horizontal expanse of the water and horizon. The sky features a subtle bokashi, a gradation of colour achieved by hand-wiping the woodblock, which transitions from a deep blue at the top to a pale tone near the horizon line. A thin band of red at the horizon suggests the time of day, perhaps dawn or dusk, adding a quiet tension to the scene.

Small figures are visible in the middle distance, tending to the plants or walking along the paths. Their presence provides a sense of scale, emphasising the height of the foreground irises. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to combine botanical observation with the conventions of the ukiyo-e genre. The use of bold, dark outlines for the petals and leaves provides structure, while the muted palette of greens, purples, and soft blues maintains a balanced aesthetic.
