A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting travellers at the Numazu station along the Tokaido road, rendered in the classic Ukiyo-e style.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene from the Numazu station, one of the stops along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition focuses on a traveller being carried in a kago, a traditional palanquin, by a porter. A second figure, likely a companion or attendant, stands to the right, holding a pipe. The figures are positioned against a simplified background of rolling hills and a solitary pine tree, which provides a sense of place without overwhelming the narrative.
Hokusai employs a clear, linear style typical of his early nineteenth-century output. The figures are rendered with precise outlines, and the colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted greens, ochres, and soft pinks to define the forms. The kago serves as the central element, drawing the eye to the passenger within. The surrounding environment is suggested through minimal detail, allowing the interaction between the porter and the travellers to remain the primary focus of the work.
Unlike the later, more famous Tokaido series by Utagawa Hiroshige, which often emphasises atmospheric conditions and weather, Hokusai’s interpretation of the route frequently prioritises human activity and social observation. This print captures a quiet moment of transit, reflecting the daily rhythms of travel during the Edo period. The use of flat colour planes and the deliberate placement of the figures demonstrate Hokusai's mastery of composition, a skill that would inform his later, more widely recognised works. The print is a representative example of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which sought to document the transient nature of life and the various scenes encountered by those moving through the Japanese countryside.
