A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting travellers resting by a fire at Shimada, from his series documenting the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene at Shimada, one of the stops along the Tokaido road, the primary route connecting Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period. Hokusai, a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, captures a moment of respite for travellers. The composition focuses on a group of men gathered around a small fire, their figures rendered with expressive, economical lines. To the left, two figures stand, one gesturing towards the distance, while the others remain seated near a simple bamboo structure.
The print is characterised by its restrained palette and clear, graphic quality. Hokusai employs horizontal bands of colour to suggest the atmosphere and the surrounding terrain, a technique that provides a sense of space without relying on heavy shading. The textures of the ground and the flickering flames of the fire are indicated through simplified, repetitive marks. This work belongs to a series documenting the various locations along the Tokaido, a subject that fascinated many artists of the period due to the popularity of travel and the cultural significance of the route.
Unlike the more dramatic, large-scale compositions found in his later series, such as the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, this print offers a quiet, observational perspective on daily life. It reflects the artist's ability to distil complex scenes into essential forms. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour block is aligned to create a cohesive image. The work remains a clear example of the narrative focus common in early nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the journey itself, rather than just the destination, forms the core of the visual story.
