Beskrivning

A classic 1954 Color Field painting by Mark Rothko, featuring stacked rectangular forms in deep earth tones and golden yellow.

Mark Rothko produced No. 9 (Dark over Light Earth) in 1954, a period during which he refined his signature compositional structure. This work features two primary rectangular forms stacked vertically against a muted, earthy ground. The upper section consists of a deep, dark mass, while the lower portion occupies a lighter, golden-yellow field. A thin, horizontal band of reddish-orange separates these two zones, creating a subtle tension between the opposing tones.

Rothko applied paint in thin, translucent layers, allowing the colours to bleed into one another at the edges. This technique creates a soft, blurred effect where the shapes appear to hover or vibrate against the canvas. By removing representational figures, Rothko focused entirely on the interaction of colour and scale. He intended for viewers to stand close to his large-scale works, allowing the fields of colour to fill their field of vision. This approach shifts the focus from the physical object to the sensory experience of the viewer.

The palette reflects the artist's interest in earth tones, moving away from the brighter hues he utilised in earlier works. The application of paint is varied, with some areas appearing opaque and others showing the texture of the canvas beneath. This variation prevents the surfaces from appearing flat, providing a sense of depth despite the lack of traditional perspective. The work is characteristic of the Color Field movement, which prioritised the emotional resonance of colour over gesture or line. Rothko avoided titles that might dictate a specific interpretation, preferring that the viewer engage directly with the visual elements. The composition remains balanced, with the weight of the dark upper rectangle anchored by the expansive, lighter base.

Artist Biography

Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz in Latvia in 1903, remains one of the most significant figures in abstract expressionism. While many associate him with colour field painting, Rothko resisted such categorisation, insisting his works were about profound human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, and doom. He sought to create paintings that resonated with viewers on a deeply personal, almost spiritual level, often drawing inspiration from mythology and philosophy.

Rothko's artistic journey evolved from early figurative works to his signature style of large, luminous rectangles of colour. These weren't mere exercises in aesthetics; Rothko intended them to be immersive experiences. He meticulously controlled the lighting and viewing conditions of his exhibitions, wanting viewers to be enveloped by the canvases and to contemplate their own existence. Famously, Rothko was commissioned to create murals for the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York, but he ultimately withdrew from the project, feeling it was inappropriate for such a setting.

Tragically, Mark Rothko's life ended in suicide in 1970, but his legacy endures. His paintings continue to captivate and challenge audiences, prompting introspection and emotional responses. Rothko's works, such as "Orange, Red, Yellow", are not just paintings; they are invitations to contemplate the human condition. His art remains a powerful testament to the expressive potential of abstract form.
