The Kisokaido was an inland route connecting Edo to Kyoto, and this specific image depicts the post station of Ochiai. Hiroshige captures the mountainous terrain of the Kiso Valley, where the road winds through steep, green slopes and dense foliage.

The composition follows the conventions of the Ukiyo-e school, utilising flat planes of colour and clear outlines to define the topography. Travellers are shown navigating the path, providing a sense of scale against the imposing hills. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo-period woodblock process, where multiple carved blocks were used to layer the ink.
