A detailed 1608 etching by Remigio Cantagallina documenting a crustacean-themed float from the wedding festivities of Cosimo de Medici.
This etching by Remigio Cantagallina depicts a large crustacean, identified as Periclemene, which served as a decorative element during the elaborate festivities held in Florence in 1608. The event celebrated the marriage of Cosimo de Medici, Prince of Tuscany, to Maria Maddalena of Austria. The spectacle included a mock naval battle staged on the Arno River, featuring various vessels and aquatic-themed floats designed to impress the visiting nobility.
Cantagallina, a skilled printmaker from Sansepolcro, documented these ephemeral structures with precision. The etching captures the creature with a focus on anatomical texture, using fine cross-hatching to define the shell and the segmented body. The water beneath the subject is rendered with rhythmic, flowing lines that suggest movement, contrasting with the static, grounded nature of the crustacean itself. The composition is straightforward, placing the subject against a simple horizon line to ensure clarity of form.
Such prints were produced to commemorate the grandeur of Medici court life, acting as a visual record of the temporary architecture and stagecraft employed during state celebrations. The inclusion of text at the base identifies the specific participant, Michelangelo Baglioni, who was responsible for this particular float. This work offers a glimpse into the intersection of early seventeenth-century engineering, courtly entertainment, and the burgeoning interest in natural history illustration. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of Cantagallina, who was well-regarded for his ability to translate complex, large-scale events into the intimate format of the etching plate. By isolating the creature from the chaos of the river battle, the artist allows for a closer examination of the craftsmanship involved in the creation of these elaborate parade floats.
