A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the bustling post station of Narumi, famous for its traditional tie-dyed fabrics.
This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the 1830s. The series documents the journey along the coastal road connecting Edo and Kyoto, a route that served as the primary artery of travel and commerce in Japan during the Edo period.
In this specific composition, Hiroshige depicts the post station of Narumi, a location widely recognised for its production of shibori, a traditional tie-dyeing technique. The scene captures the bustling atmosphere of the town, where shops display their textile wares under blue noren curtains. Travellers, including a group carrying a palanquin and a man leading a pack horse, navigate the road, providing a sense of the daily movement through the station.
Hiroshige employs a balanced perspective, placing the architectural structures to the left and right to frame the central activity. The use of colour is restrained, relying on subtle gradients in the sky and the characteristic indigo tones associated with the tie-dyed fabrics of the region. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to combine topographical accuracy with the human elements of travel. By focusing on the specific industry of Narumi, Hiroshige provides a glimpse into the regional specialities that defined the various stops along the Tokaido road. The work remains a primary source for understanding the social and economic life of nineteenth-century Japan, capturing the intersection of commerce, travel, and local craft.
