A sensitive lithograph by George Bellows depicting the artist with his wife and two daughters in a quiet domestic moment.
George Bellows was a central figure in early twentieth-century American art, known for his energetic depictions of urban life and his technical mastery of lithography. This work, titled My Family, First Stone, offers a quiet, domestic counterpoint to his more aggressive boxing scenes or city street views. The composition features the artist himself, his wife Emma, and their two daughters, Anne and Jean, gathered in a domestic setting. Bellows employs a soft, atmospheric application of lithographic crayon, creating a sense of intimacy through the gentle interplay of light and shadow across the figures.
The print captures a moment of familial stillness. Bellows sits behind his wife, who occupies the centre of the frame, while the children are positioned to either side. The use of the lithographic stone allows for a range of tonal values, from the deep, velvety blacks of the clothing to the lighter, more ethereal grey tones that define the faces and the curved back of the sofa. The artist's hand is visible in the fluid, expressive marks that define the forms, suggesting a spontaneous yet carefully considered approach to the subject.
Bellows began his serious exploration of lithography in 1916, often working with the printer Bolton Brown. This particular print reflects his interest in the medium's capacity for painterly effects, moving away from the rigid lines of traditional engraving. The work provides a glimpse into the private life of the artist, revealing his ability to translate personal affection into a formal composition. The lack of rigid structure in the background keeps the focus entirely on the psychological connection between the family members. It is a study of domestic harmony, rendered with the technical precision that defined Bellows's later career in printmaking.
