Portret van een jongen - Huib van Hove Bz

A 1837 lithographic portrait by Dutch artist Huib van Hove Bz, capturing a young man in formal attire with delicate shading and classic nineteenth-century style.

This lithographic portrait, dated 1837, captures the likeness of a young man with a focused, contemplative expression. The work is attributed to the Dutch artist Huib van Hove Bz, a painter and lithographer known for his genre scenes and portraits during the mid-nineteenth century. The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing a dark coat and a cravat, which reflects the formal attire common to the period.

The technical execution demonstrates the capabilities of the lithographic medium, allowing for soft transitions between light and shadow. The artist employs fine hatching to model the facial features and the texture of the clothing, creating a sense of volume without the need for heavy outlines. A faint, ghost-like sketch of a face appears in the upper right background, suggesting this print may have been derived from a larger study or a collection of sketches transferred to stone.

The composition is restrained, placing the subject against a neutral ground to ensure the viewer's attention remains on the sitter's features. The signature and date, 'Clermans 1837', appear in the lower left, while the printer's mark, 'Lith. de K. Fretz', is visible in the lower right. This print offers a glimpse into the portraiture traditions of the Netherlands during the 1830s, where lithography became an accessible method for reproducing likenesses for a wider audience. The work maintains a balance between technical precision and the informal quality of a sketch, providing a direct connection to the sitter's personality.
