A 1921 interior scene by Henri Matisse, featuring two figures set against an ornate screen in his Nice studio.
Painted in 1921, Moorish Screen captures a quiet domestic moment within the artist's Nice studio. Henri Matisse frequently utilised his living spaces as stages for his compositions, often incorporating exotic textiles and decorative objects collected during his travels. The work features two women, one standing and one seated, positioned before a large, ornate screen that dominates the background. The screen, with its repetitive, lace-like patterns, flattens the pictorial space, a technique Matisse refined throughout his career to balance representation with decorative surface design.
The composition is anchored by a circular table in the foreground, which holds a vase of flowers and a few books. The floor is covered by a dark, patterned rug that contrasts with the warmer, red-toned floor covering on the right side of the frame. Matisse employs a light, fluid brushwork that allows the underlying canvas to show through in areas, giving the scene an airy, unforced quality. The figures are rendered with soft, simplified forms, their presence secondary to the overall arrangement of colour and pattern.
This painting reflects the artist's fascination with the interplay between interior architecture and decorative art. By placing his subjects against the complex geometry of the screen, Matisse creates a dialogue between the human form and the surrounding environment. The palette is balanced, moving from the cool, muted tones of the screen to the warmer, saturated reds of the floor and the soft whites of the women's dresses. It is a characteristic example of his Nice period, where the focus shifted towards a more relaxed, observational approach to the interior, prioritising the harmony of shapes and the decorative potential of the everyday setting.
