Mitsuke: Ferryboats on the Tenryu River - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the twenty-ninth station of the Tokaido road, Mitsuke. It belongs to the series known as the Reisho Tokaido, a set of prints characterised by the use of clerical script (reisho) in the cartouches. The composition captures the wide, expansive nature of the Tenryu River, a major waterway that travellers had to cross during their journey between Edo and Kyoto.

Hiroshige employs a horizontal format to emphasise the breadth of the riverbed. Several small ferryboats navigate the shallow, braided channels, carrying passengers and goods across the water. The artist uses a restrained palette, focusing on the cool blues of the river and the soft, warm tones of the distant hills at dawn or dusk. A cluster of pine trees stands on the left bank, providing a vertical counterpoint to the low, horizontal lines of the sandbars and the distant mountain range. The water is rendered with simple, rhythmic lines, suggesting the gentle movement of the current.

Unlike his earlier, more famous series of the Tokaido, this iteration displays a different approach to spatial organisation and colour application. The print reflects the technical capabilities of the woodblock medium during the mid-nineteenth century, with clear registration and subtle colour gradients in the sky. It offers a view into the daily life of travellers in Edo-period Japan, documenting the infrastructure and natural geography of the route. The scene is quiet and observational, focusing on the rhythm of travel rather than dramatic action. This print provides a clear example of Hiroshige's ability to capture the atmosphere of a specific location through careful observation of light, water, and topography.
