A delicate lithograph by Albert Belleroche, capturing a woman with a harp in a soft, gestural style typical of the Belle Époque.
Albert Belleroche, a British artist of French descent, produced this lithograph during his time in Paris. He maintained a close association with the artistic circles of the period, including a notable friendship with John Singer Sargent. His work often focused on the female form, captured with a light, gestural touch that prioritised atmosphere over rigid anatomical precision.
In this portrait, the subject, Marthe, stands beside a harp. The composition relies on soft, fluid lines that suggest the presence of the instrument and the fabric of her gown without defining every edge. Belleroche utilised the texture of the lithographic stone to create a hazy, ethereal quality. The figure appears to emerge from the paper, with the artist leaving large areas of the background untouched to focus the viewer on the subject's posture and expression.
The choice of a harp as a prop aligns with the aesthetic interests of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, where musical instruments were common motifs in portraiture to suggest grace and refinement. Belleroche's technique here demonstrates his mastery of the lithographic medium, specifically his ability to modulate pressure to achieve varying degrees of shadow and light. The work avoids heavy outlines, opting instead for a sketch-like quality that feels immediate and unstudied. This print offers a glimpse into the domestic and social spheres of the Belle Époque, capturing a moment of quiet repose. The muted tones and the delicate handling of the subject's features reflect the artist's preference for subtlety and mood. It is a representative example of his graphic output, which remains highly regarded for its technical skill and sensitive observation of his sitters.
