A delicate lithographic portrait by Albert Belleroche, capturing a subject in a moment of quiet, expressive contemplation.
Albert Belleroche was a British artist who spent much of his career in France, where he became a master of the lithographic medium. This portrait of Dolores captures the fluid, expressive potential of lithography, a technique Belleroche favoured for its ability to mimic the spontaneity of charcoal or chalk drawing. The subject is depicted with a gentle, knowing smile, her figure emerging from a dark, atmospheric background that suggests a quiet interior setting.
Belleroche focuses on the play of light across the subject's face and the soft textures of her attire. His use of varied pressure allows for deep, velvety blacks in the shadows, contrasting with the lighter, more delicate marks that define the contours of her features and the folds of her clothing. The composition is balanced, with the subject positioned centrally, her relaxed posture conveying a sense of intimacy. Unlike the rigid portraiture of the Victorian era, this work reflects the more relaxed, observational approach common during the Belle Époque period.
As a close associate of John Singer Sargent, Belleroche shared an interest in capturing the fleeting character of his sitters. He avoided excessive detail, preferring to suggest form through tonal shifts and gestural marks. This print demonstrates his technical proficiency, showing how he manipulated the lithographic stone to achieve a painterly quality. The work remains a fine example of early twentieth-century portraiture, where the focus shifts from formal representation to the capture of a specific mood or moment in time. The print is presented here with the same attention to tonal range and paper texture found in the original edition, ensuring the subtle nuances of Belleroche's mark-making are preserved for the viewer.
