A striking 1913 woodcut by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, depicting a markhor in a cage through precise, rhythmic line work.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his technical precision and his focus on animal subjects. This woodcut, titled Markhorgeit (Zittend hert in een kooi), demonstrates his ability to translate the texture of fur and the structure of bone into a stark, monochromatic medium. The work features a markhor, a large wild goat, positioned within the confines of a cage. The artist uses a series of rhythmic, parallel lines to define the animal's coat, creating a sense of volume and density against the dark background.
The composition is divided by the vertical bars of the enclosure, which act as a framing device. This choice forces the viewer to observe the animal through a barrier, adding a layer of psychological tension to the scene. The markhor's gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a state of resignation or quiet observation. De Mesquita's approach to the woodcut medium is disciplined: he avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to rely on the contrast between the white lines carved into the block and the black ink of the background.
De Mesquita was a teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Haarlem and later in Amsterdam, where he influenced many younger artists, including M.C. Escher. His work often explored the intersection of natural observation and graphic stylisation. This print is a clear example of his mature style, where the economy of line serves to heighten the emotional impact of the subject. The geometric regularity of the cage bars contrasts with the organic, flowing lines used to render the animal, creating a visual dialogue between the natural world and the man-made environment. The date, 1913, is visible in the upper right corner, consistent with the artist's monogram.

Artist Biography
Samuel Jessurun De Mesquita
After the Nazis deported De Mesquita and his family in February 1944, M.C. Escher went to his teacher's ransacked house and rescued as much of his work as he could. Some of the prints Escher saved still bear the muddy boot prints of German soldiers. De Mesquita, his wife Elisabeth and their son Jaap all died in the camps.
He was born in Amsterdam in 1868, of Portuguese Sephardic Jewish origin. He trained there and was appointed teacher at the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem in 1902, where he remained until 1926. Escher was his most famous student; it was De Mesquita who convinced the young Escher to abandon architecture for graphic arts, a decision that changed twentieth-century visual culture.
De Mesquita produced over four hundred prints, including woodcuts, wood engravings, etchings and lithographs, plus drawings and textile designs. His animal and bird woodcuts, with their stark black-and-white stylisation influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e, are among his most distinctive work. He was not religiously observant despite his Sephardic community background. His wife Elisabeth was gassed alongside him at Auschwitz; their son Jaap perished at Theresienstadt a month later. He died at Auschwitz, around 11 February 1944, at seventy-five.
