A formal portrait of Maharaja Sardar Singh of Bikaner, rendered in the traditional opaque watercolour style of the Rajasthani School.
This portrait depicts Maharaja Sardar Singh of Bikaner, a ruler of the princely state in Rajasthan, India. Executed by the artist Chotu, the work follows the conventions of nineteenth-century Rajasthani court painting. The Maharaja is shown in a frontal, symmetrical pose, seated before a dark backdrop framed by green curtains. His presence is defined by his voluminous white moustache and beard, which contrast with the saturated orange of his tunic.
The artist employs a precise, linear style to render the details of the Maharaja's attire and jewellery. Multiple strings of pearls and emeralds adorn his chest, while his turban is decorated with a sarpech, a traditional ornament. The hands, resting upon a dark, circular object, are painted with careful attention to the texture of the skin and the placement of rings. The composition is highly structured, relying on a central axis that conveys the authority of the subject.
Rajasthani portraiture of this period often combined traditional Indian aesthetics with subtle influences from European photography and portrait painting, particularly in the treatment of light and the formal arrangement of the sitter. The use of opaque watercolour, or gouache, allows for the flat, saturated colour fields that characterise this style. The background, while simple, provides a stage for the figure, ensuring the viewer focuses on the Maharaja's expression and status. This print captures the technical skill of the Bikaner court artists, who were known for their ability to balance decorative elements with the individual likeness of their patrons. The work remains a record of the visual culture of the Bikaner court during the mid-nineteenth century, documenting both the fashion of the era and the formal requirements of royal portraiture.
