A refined ink and wash portrait of Maharaja Rai Singh of Bikaner by the Mughal artist Nur Muhammad, featuring traditional court attire and period inscriptions.
This drawing depicts Maharaja Rai Singh of Bikaner, a ruler who held a position of authority within the Mughal administrative system during the late sixteenth century. The artist, Nur Muhammad, employs a delicate line to define the figure, capturing the Maharaja in a three-quarter profile. He stands with a composed posture, his hands resting upon the hilt of a long sword, which serves as a vertical anchor for the composition.
The work is characteristic of the Mughal court style, which prioritised clarity of form and precise observation. The Maharaja wears a jama, a traditional coat, with a sash tied at the waist. His turban and jewellery are rendered with minimal shading, allowing the linear quality of the drawing to remain the primary focus. The paper surface shows signs of age, providing a neutral background that emphasises the ink work.
Surrounding the figure are various inscriptions in Devanagari script. These annotations provide context regarding the subject, identifying the Maharaja and his reign. Such drawings were often produced as preparatory studies or as part of a courtly record, documenting the appearance of nobility and officials. The lack of heavy colour application suggests this piece functioned as a working document or a refined sketch rather than a finished, gilded miniature. The balance between the figure and the surrounding text creates a structured visual field, typical of the period's interest in documenting historical figures through both image and word. This print offers a view into the artistic practices of the Mughal era, where the draughtsman's skill in capturing individual likenesses was highly valued.
