This work by Gai Qi depicts a Luohan, a Buddhist practitioner who has attained enlightenment, seated within the hollow of a gnarled tree. Gai Qi, a prominent artist of the Qing Dynasty, is recognised for his refined brushwork and his ability to capture subtle expressions in figure painting. The composition focuses on the contrast between the organic, weathered texture of the ancient tree and the serene, simplified form of the figure. The Luohan appears calm, his posture suggesting a state of deep meditation.
