A traditional ink painting by Huang Shen depicting a game of Cuju, featuring expressive calligraphic brushwork and historical Chinese figures.
Huang Shen, a member of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, produced this work during the Qing Dynasty. The painting depicts a scene of Cuju, an ancient Chinese ball game that shares similarities with modern football. The figures are rendered with the artist's characteristic calligraphic brushwork, which prioritises expressive, fluid lines over rigid anatomical precision. The composition is sparse, allowing the negative space of the paper to suggest the open ground upon which the game occurs.
The figures wear traditional robes, their postures capturing the movement and concentration required for the sport. Huang Shen often focused on the lives of common people, scholars, and historical figures, imbuing them with a sense of humanity and individual character. The ink wash technique provides subtle tonal variations, creating a sense of volume within the drapery of the clothing. A column of calligraphy in the upper right corner provides context and poetic commentary, a standard feature in traditional Chinese literati painting that integrates text and image into a unified aesthetic experience.
This print captures the aged texture of the original paper, preserving the muted earth tones and the specific quality of the ink strokes. The work offers a glimpse into the social pastimes of the period, presented through the lens of a painter known for his unconventional approach to traditional subjects. By focusing on the interaction between the players, Huang Shen creates a narrative moment that feels both immediate and historical. The balance between the calligraphic text and the figurative elements demonstrates the technical skill associated with the Yangzhou school, where artists sought to break away from the strict academic conventions of the time in favour of a more personal and spontaneous style.
