Looking Refined - A Court Lady of the Kyowa Era - Tsukioka Yoshitoshi

A refined portrait of a court lady from the Kyowa era, part of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's celebrated series on historical Japanese customs.

This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi is part of his series titled 'Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners' (Fuzoku sanjuniso). Published in 1888, the series captures the shifting aesthetic ideals of women across various historical periods in Japan. This specific work depicts a court lady from the Kyowa era (1801–1804), identified by her distinctive hairstyle and the shaved eyebrows characteristic of aristocratic fashion during that time.

Yoshitoshi employs a clean, balanced composition that focuses on the subject's upper torso and head. The figure is rendered with calligraphic lines that define the folds of her kimono and the volume of her hair. The colour palette is restrained, relying on a soft cream tone for the outer garment, which contrasts with the bold, saturated red of the under-garment and the decorative cords. The background is a neutral grey, which prevents the image from becoming cluttered and keeps the viewer's attention on the subject's expression and posture.

As one of the final masters of the ukiyo-e tradition, Yoshitoshi brought a psychological depth to his subjects that was often absent in earlier prints. The lady's expression is calm, yet the precision of the line work suggests a high degree of social status and formality. The inclusion of cartouches in the upper right and left corners provides context, typical of the format used in late nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking. This print offers a window into the historical fascination with the fashions of the past, presented through the technical skill of a printmaker who navigated the transition between traditional woodblock techniques and the influence of Western artistic styles.
