Beskrivning
A woodblock print from Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's series 'Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners', depicting a housewife from the Bunsei era.
This woodblock print is part of the series 'Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners' (Fuzoku sanjuniso), produced by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in 1888. The series examines the changing social norms and fashions of women across different historical periods in Japan. This specific work depicts a housewife from the Bunsei era (1818–1830), a period often associated with relative peace and cultural development.
The composition focuses on the subject in a moment of physical discomfort or fatigue, suggested by the title. The woman is shown leaning against a wooden chest, her posture conveying a sense of weariness. Yoshitoshi employs a refined line quality to define the contours of her face and the elaborate arrangement of her hair, which is adorned with traditional combs and pins. Her kimono features a repeating floral pattern, rendered with precision, while the outer garment provides a contrast in colour and texture.
Yoshitoshi was a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. His work often bridges the gap between traditional ukiyo-e and the psychological depth of modern portraiture. Unlike earlier artists who focused on idealised beauty, Yoshitoshi captures specific human emotions and physical states. The print demonstrates his technical skill in woodblock carving and colour application, particularly in the subtle gradients of the cartouche and the wood grain texture of the chest. The work provides a window into the domestic life and aesthetic preferences of the nineteenth century, presented through the lens of a historical retrospective.
