Beskrivning
A woodblock print from the series 'Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners' by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, depicting a fireman's wife in the Kaei era.
This woodblock print is part of the series 'Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners' (Fuzoku sanjuniso), produced by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in 1888. The series examines the changing social conditions and fashion trends of Japanese women across different historical eras. This specific image depicts a fireman's wife from the Kaei era (1848-1854), a period preceding the Meiji Restoration.
The subject is rendered with the characteristic precision of Yoshitoshi, who was one of the final masters of the ukiyo-e tradition. She is shown in a moment of quiet anticipation, her gaze directed away from the viewer as if she hears an approaching visitor. Her attire, a checked kimono, is rendered with clean lines, while the background features a bold, graphic representation of a fireman's standard or coat, providing a strong visual contrast to the figure. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones for the clothing and background, punctuated by the deep red of the fireman's emblem and the subtle blue of her collar.
Yoshitoshi was known for his psychological depth and his ability to capture fleeting expressions. In this work, the artist avoids overly decorative flourishes, focusing instead on the posture and the specific historical markers of the subject's dress. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in Meiji-period woodblock production, where the registration of colour blocks and the quality of the line work remained high despite the increasing influence of Western artistic techniques. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned to draw the eye towards her expression, while the surrounding elements provide context regarding her social status and the era she represents.
