Beskrivning
A woodblock print from Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's 1888 series, depicting a woman from the Kaei era in a moment of quiet domestic activity.
This woodblock print is part of the series 'Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners' (Fuzoku sanjuniso), produced by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in 1888. The series examines the changing social roles and personal expressions of women across different historical periods in Japan. In this specific composition, the artist depicts a woman from the Kaei era (1848-1854), identified as a proprietress, engaged in the quiet activity of tending to potted plants.
Yoshitoshi employs a refined line quality to define the subject's features and the folds of her striped kimono. The composition balances the figure against a neutral background, allowing the viewer to focus on the subtle expression of the woman. Her posture, leaning forward with a pot in her hands, suggests a moment of domestic focus. The inclusion of a small lamp and a plum branch adds specific narrative detail to the scene, grounding the figure in a particular domestic environment. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on the interplay between the blue-toned stripes of the garment and the muted tones of the background to create a sense of historical distance.
As a late master of the ukiyo-e tradition, Yoshitoshi brought a psychological depth to his subjects that departed from the more stylised conventions of his predecessors. This print demonstrates his ability to capture individual character through gesture and facial expression. The work functions as a historical record of fashion and social custom, while also operating as a study of human behaviour. The print is a characteristic example of the Meiji-period interest in documenting the past, presented through the technical precision of traditional Japanese printmaking.
