A traditional Ottoman levha featuring a Hadith in elegant Thuluth script, dated 1804. This piece exemplifies the refined artistry of historical Islamic calligraphy.
This piece is a traditional Ottoman levha, a form of wall-mounted calligraphy designed for display in homes, mosques, or public buildings. The work features a Hadith, a recorded saying of the Prophet Muhammad, rendered in the Thuluth script. This script is known for its curved lines and elegant proportions, often used for monumental inscriptions and formal documents within Islamic art traditions.
The composition is balanced, with the text arranged in two primary horizontal registers. The upper section contains the introductory phrase, while the lower section presents the core message of the Hadith. To the left, a smaller, circular arrangement of text serves as a signature or seal, providing context for the production of the piece. The date 1219, corresponding to the year 1804 in the Gregorian calendar, is visible, placing this work within the late Ottoman period.
Ottoman calligraphy reached a high level of technical refinement during this era. The calligrapher demonstrates mastery over the pen, ensuring that the vertical strokes maintain a consistent rhythm while the horizontal connections flow with precision. The contrast between the light-coloured ink and the dark background is a common aesthetic choice in levha production, intended to make the sacred text legible and visually striking. Such works were not merely decorative; they functioned as reminders of religious teachings, integrating spiritual reflection into the daily environment. The precision of the letterforms reflects the rigorous training required of calligraphers in the Ottoman tradition, where the mastery of specific scripts was a lifelong pursuit. This print captures the clarity and formal beauty of the original manuscript, preserving the balance between the written word and the spatial arrangement of the composition.
