A refined example of the Tughra of Sultan Mahmud II, executed by the master Ottoman calligrapher Mustafa Rakim in gilded script.
The Tughra is a calligraphic emblem, a stylised signature of an Ottoman Sultan. This specific example represents the Tughra of Sultan Mahmud II, executed by the master calligrapher Mustafa Rakim. Rakim is widely recognised for his technical mastery of the Jali Thuluth script, which he refined to achieve a new level of balance and proportion. His work transformed the Tughra from a functional administrative seal into a sophisticated form of visual art.
The composition features the characteristic vertical shafts, known as tugh, and the sweeping, curved lines that define the Sultan's name and titles. The gold leaf application against the dark background creates a high-contrast effect, emphasising the precision of the letterforms. Rakim's approach to the Tughra involved a rigorous mathematical structure, ensuring that the negative space within the design remains as intentional as the strokes themselves. The ornamental flourish at the top, resembling a bow or knot, adds a sculptural quality to the two-dimensional script.
Mustafa Rakim held a position of great respect within the Ottoman court, and his influence on subsequent generations of calligraphers was significant. His ability to manipulate the thickness and flow of the ink, or in this case the gilded relief, allowed for a sense of movement within a static emblem. This piece demonstrates the intersection of state authority and aesthetic refinement, where the identity of the ruler is communicated through the disciplined hand of the artist. The clarity of the lines and the deliberate spacing reflect the standards of the late Ottoman period, where calligraphic excellence was a primary measure of cultural sophistication.
