Paul Cézanne painted this view of L'Estaque during his frequent visits to the small fishing village near Marseille. The composition is framed by the dark, rhythmic trunks of pine trees in the foreground, which act as a screen for the Mediterranean scene beyond. Through these branches, the viewer observes the terracotta roofs of the village houses, set against the blue expanse of the Gulf of Marseille.
Cézanne employs a structured approach to colour and form in this work. He uses short, deliberate brushstrokes to build the architecture of the houses and the texture of the foliage.
