Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard, son of the celebrated Jean-Honore Fragonard, developed a distinct artistic identity rooted in the rigour of Neoclassicism. This work, titled La Sagesse, presents a seated female figure embodying the virtue of Wisdom. The composition draws heavily upon the visual language of antiquity, utilising a balanced, frontal posture that recalls the monumental statuary of the Greco-Roman tradition. The figure is draped in heavy, classical robes, with her right hand raised in a gesture of instruction or contemplation, while her left hand holds a wreath of stars.

The artist employs a monochromatic palette of graphite and wash to create a sculptural effect. The stark contrast between the figure and the dark background mimics the appearance of a relief carving or a study for a larger public monument. The base upon which the figure sits is decorated with smaller, secondary allegorical reliefs, which provide a sense of scale and architectural context.
