A refined 1798 engraving by Charles Clément Bervic, depicting an allegorical scene of a youth interacting with a dove and a serpent in a wooded setting.
Charles Clément Bervic, a master of the burin, produced this engraving in 1798 after a painting by Michel-Honoré Bounieu. The work depicts a young, semi-nude figure standing in a wooded setting, holding a dove against their chest while offering a morsel to a snake. This composition draws upon traditional allegorical motifs, contrasting the purity of the bird with the perceived danger of the serpent. The figure stands near a pool of water, their form rendered with the precise anatomical clarity typical of late eighteenth-century French printmaking.
Bervic was highly regarded for his technical control, particularly his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil painting into the linear language of engraving. The background features dense foliage and textured tree trunks, executed with a variety of cross-hatching techniques that create a sense of depth and atmosphere. The foreground remains clear, allowing the central figure to occupy the space with a quiet, deliberate presence. The inclusion of a small medallion at the base of the print, a common feature in formal engravings of this period, provides a sense of official documentation and artistic pedigree.
This print reflects the Neoclassical interest in moralising themes and the idealised human form. The artist employs a balanced composition, where the verticality of the trees and the figure is offset by the horizontal elements of the ground and the water. The work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship required to achieve such subtle gradations of light and shadow using only metal plates and ink. It remains a representative example of the technical rigour applied to allegorical subjects during the late Enlightenment era in France.
