This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts a woman playing the koto, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument. The work belongs to the series The Six Arts in Fashionable Guise, which adapts the classical Confucian concept of the six arts into the contemporary aesthetic of the Edo period. Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, brought a refined sensibility to the ukiyo-e genre, often favouring elongated figures and a sense of aristocratic grace.

The composition focuses on the musician, who is positioned in a seated posture. Her kimono features subtle patterns, rendered with the precision characteristic of late eighteenth-century printmaking. The background includes a screen decorated with floral motifs, providing a sense of interior space without relying on heavy perspective.
