A seventeenth-century Bikaner miniature painting depicting the Kedar Ragini, a musical mode associated with night and devotion, featuring two figures in a serene outdoor setting.
This miniature painting originates from the Bikaner court in Rajasthan, attributed to the artist Ruknuddin. It depicts the Kedar Ragini, a musical mode traditionally associated with the night and devotion. The composition features two figures seated beneath a large, central tree against a night sky filled with stars and a crescent moon. One figure, an ascetic with ash-smeared skin, sits in contemplation, while the other plays a stringed instrument, likely a veena, while perched upon a tiger skin.
The Bikaner style is known for its distinct approach to colour and form, often displaying a degree of restraint compared to other Rajasthani schools. The palette here relies on soft greens, earthy tones, and the muted blue of the nocturnal sky. The figures are rendered with precise, fine lines, typical of the meticulous nature of courtly miniature production. The border, decorated with a repeating floral motif, frames the central scene, drawing the eye toward the interaction between the two musicians.
Ragamala paintings, or garlands of musical modes, represent a synthesis of visual art, poetry, and music. Each folio serves as a visual interpretation of a specific raga, capturing the mood and emotional resonance of the musical composition. This work reflects the cultural environment of the seventeenth-century Bikaner court, where artists were commissioned to produce series that catalogued these modes. The attention to detail in the clothing, the musical instrument, and the natural elements provides insight into the aesthetic preferences of the period. The work remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in Indian miniature painting, where the artist balances narrative content with a structured, decorative arrangement.
