A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai from his waterfall series, depicting the Kiyo Falls and a mountain shrine along the Tōkaidō road.
This woodblock print belongs to the series Tour of the Waterfalls in Various Provinces (Shokoku taki meguri), produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the 1830s. The composition depicts the Kiyo Falls, located near the Sakanoshita station on the Tōkaidō road. Hokusai employs a vertical format to emphasise the height of the cascade, which dominates the left side of the image. The water is rendered with stylised, rope-like lines that contrast with the organic, rounded forms of the surrounding cliffs and foliage.
At the base of the falls, a small cluster of thatched-roof buildings provides a sense of scale and human activity. Travellers are shown ascending a steep path carved into the rock face, leading towards a small shrine dedicated to Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion. The colour palette relies on distinct blocks of Prussian blue, soft greens, and warm ochre tones, characteristic of the artist's mature period. The use of Prussian blue, a synthetic pigment imported from Europe, allowed Hokusai to achieve the deep, saturated tones seen in the water and the distant mountain slopes.
Unlike his earlier works, this series focuses on the power and form of water in various natural settings. Hokusai balances the geometric precision of the architecture with the fluid, rhythmic motion of the waterfall. The print demonstrates his ability to integrate human figures into the natural environment without diminishing the scale of the geography. The inclusion of the shrine adds a layer of cultural context, linking the physical journey along the Tōkaidō with the spiritual practice of pilgrimage. This print remains a clear example of the technical mastery achieved by Hokusai in his later years, showcasing his control over the woodblock medium to create depth and atmosphere.
