A dramatic woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei depicting the Kabuki actor Arashi Rikan II in a scene from the ghost story Yotsuya Kaidan.
This woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei captures a moment from the ghost story Yotsuya Kaidan, a classic of the Kabuki theatre repertoire. The actor Arashi Rikan II portrays the character Iemon, who is shown in a crouched, defensive posture. He holds a sword between his teeth, a common visual trope in theatrical prints to convey intensity and impending violence. The composition draws upon the supernatural themes popularised by Katsushika Hokusai in his series Hyaku monogatari, or One Hundred Ghost Stories.
The print utilises a stark, dark background to create a sense of foreboding. At the bottom of the frame, the ghostly presence of the murdered wife, Oiwa, appears as a spectral manifestation upon a broken lantern. The contrast between the physical presence of the actor and the ethereal, fragmented nature of the spirit reflects the conventions of the Kamigata school of printmaking, which often favoured expressive, sometimes grotesque, characterisations of actors. The use of negative space and the deliberate placement of the figures guide the viewer through the narrative tension of the scene.
Shunbaisai Hokuei was active in Osaka during the early 19th century. His work is noted for its focus on the theatricality of the Kabuki stage, often depicting actors in specific roles with great attention to their facial expressions and body language. This print serves as a record of the performance style of the era, documenting both the costume and the dramatic staging of ghost plays. The inclusion of calligraphy within the dark upper portion of the print provides context to the scene, integrating text and image in the traditional manner of Japanese woodblock production. The print remains a clear example of the intersection between popular folklore and the commercial theatre culture of Edo-period Japan.
