This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the fifty-second station of the Tokaido road, Ishibe. It belongs to the series known as the Reisho Tokaido, named for the clerical script (reisho) used in the cartouches. Unlike his earlier, more atmospheric series, this set focuses on the daily activities within the roadside inns that served travellers on the route between Edo and Kyoto.

The composition offers a cross-section view of a bustling inn. Hiroshige employs a clear, architectural structure to organise the various figures. A server carries a tray of food across a wooden walkway, while other guests rest in their rooms or prepare for the evening. The scene captures the mundane reality of travel during the Edo period. The architecture is rendered with precise lines, contrasting with the softer, organic forms of the pine trees and plants in the foreground. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted blues, greens, and warm wood tones to create a sense of calm domesticity.

Hiroshige was a master of the ukiyo-e tradition, and his work often documented the changing nature of Japanese society. By focusing on the interior life of the inn, he provides a glimpse into the social interactions of the time.
